Jerry V. Sergeant, 69, Topeka, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003 at a Topeka hospital.
Mr. Sergeant worked for the federal government as an electrical engineer. He was an amateur radio operator with the call sign WOWAJ.
He was born Sept. 8, 1934, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Mason A. and Mildred E. Seitz Sergeant. He graduated from Davenport High School in Iowa in 1952. He attended Grinnell College and then the University of Iowa. He graduated in 1958 earning a Bachelor degree in engineering. He spent most of his life in Iowa before moving to Topeka five years ago. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Bettendorf, Iowa.
He married Phaleta L. Hainline on Sept. 1, 1956, in Bettendorf, Iowa. She survives.
Other survivors include three sons, Steven E. Sergeant and his wife, Jean Highman-Sergeant, San Jose, CA; Paul K. and his wife, Mary, Maplegrove, MN; Bruce A. and his wife, Julie, Lecompton, KS; Four Granddaughters, Lisa M. Frank, Katie Sergeant, Haley Sergeant and Erin Sergeant; one sister, Nancy J. Hemingway, Clinton, IA.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Highland Chapel. Burial will be in Lynn Creek Cemetery in Berryton. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time on Saturday at the funeral chapel. Mr. Sergeant will lie in state after 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
