Jesse B. Sympson, 95, passed away December 1, 2015 at Topeka, Kansas. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Tisdale Church in Winfield, Kansas. Inurnment will follow at Tisdale Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Winfield American Legion or Tisdale Church.
Jesse was born on February 24, 1920 at Rolla, Kansas to Arvin Gaines and Edna Polly (Bonnell) Sympson. After graduating from school, he worked for various farmers in the area before he served his country in the US Army from 1941-1945 through three major campaigns in the South Pacific as squad leader with an antitank company. He was awarded a Good Conduct medal, Silver Star medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars and the Asiatic Pacific Services Medal. Following his discharge he worked further with the Civilian Conservation Corps throughout Kansas.
He married Phyllis May Bergdall on May 16, 1948 in Winfield, Kansas. He worked various jobs in Winfield. After completing a course of study in Kansas City to become a certified Ford mechanic, he used those skills repairing Ford equipment for many farmers in southeast Kansas. He was known as the "Ford Man" and was called on night and day to help out farmers in need. He also worked at Boeing in Wichita and later worked at Eby Construction in Wichita alongside his son, Kevin. He owned and operated Sympson Repair for years. He was a lifelong Winfield resident until 2008 when he moved with Phyllis to Topeka to live with their daughter, Jacalyn. He was a member of the Winfield American Legion and Tisdale United Methodist Church.
Jesse is survived by his wife Phyllis; daughter Jacalyn (Sympson) Matney, Topeka; granddaughter Shalon (Sympson) Lock and her husband Chris, Winfield; grandson Austin Sympson and wife Electra Knowles, Winfield; great-granddaughter Lilliahnna Cade Sympson; and great-grandson Kane Hall Sympson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Orville, William, LaVere, Herbert, Doris Fern, Mildred Rachel and Edna Mae; and his son, Kevin Sympson.
