Jesse Howard Hicks, 96, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, December 31, 2017.
He was born December 30, 1921 in Buckhart, Missouri, the son of Warren and Eliza Maude (Knight) Hicks. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard, stationed in the Philippines during WW II from March 1, 1943 until being honorably discharged on December 1, 1945.
Jesse married Mabel Kathleen Perkins on April 27, 1946 in Evening Shade, Arkansas. They moved to Topeka, Kansas in 1947. He owned and operated the B & J Cabinet Shop in Topeka from 1963 until he retired in 2002.
He was a member of Northland Christian Church, and American Legion Post No. 400 of North Topeka.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel of Topeka; two sisters, Virgie (William) Jackson of Sedalia, MO and Jewell Spurgeon of Springfield, MO; sister-in-law, Dorothy Hicks of Pace, FL; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Jesse was a kind, generous man who enjoyed bird hunting, fishing, gardening, camping and traveling.
A funeral ceremony will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 4, 2018 at the Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave, Topeka. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow at Topeka Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Northland Christian Church, 3102 NW Topeka Blvd, Topeka, KS 66617, Topeka Rescue Mission, 600 N Kansas, Topeka, KS 66608 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
