October 14, 1927 — June 9, 2020

Jesse D. "J.D." Smith, 92, of Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at Oakley Place in Topeka. He was born October 14, 1927 in Valley Falls, Kansas, the son of Luther Sidney and Lora Alice (Davis) Smith.

Jesse attended Valley Falls High School. He was an Army Veteran during WWII. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service where he retired in 1987. Jesse was a member of the Valley Falls Christian Church and the Highland Park United Methodist Church. He was an avid fisherman. He and his wife enjoyed traveling across all 50 states in their RV.

Jesse married Joyce Ailene Rinehart on July 29, 1956. They were married for over 63 years. She survives. Other survivors include their children, Greg (Teresa) Smith of Berryton, Brian (Vickie) Smith of Topeka, three granddaughters, Kirsten, Seanna and Brianne, one great-grandson, Aiden, his sister, Edna Jackson of Valley Falls and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jesse was preceded in death by his siblings, Luther Everett Smith, Mary Allen, James Smith, Dorothy Meyer and Gertrude Bailey.

Jesse will lie in state from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2020 at Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. Private committal will take place in Valley Falls Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Interim Hospice, 1251 SW Arrowhead Rd., Ste. 103, Topeka, Kansas 66604 or to the Highland Park United Methodist Church, 2914 S.E. Michigan Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66605.
