Joan R. Bunker, 80, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, November 14, 2013. She was born November 25, 1932, in El Dorado, Kansas, the daughter of Levi and Osa (Hodgens) Scott. She graduated from McPherson High School, where she was a cheerleader as a senior, and later received her nursing degree in 1953 from St. Luke's School of Nursing in Kansas City. Joan later passed her state boards in nursing in Boston, Massachusetts.
Joan was employed by Dr. M.D. Morris for many years, retiring in 1984.
She was a member of Central Congregational Church of Topeka. She loved to play bridge, enjoyed traveling, and walking with friends.
Joan married her high school sweetheart, Edward R. Bunker, on July 13, 1952, in Hebron, Nebraska.
Other survivors include son, Scott Bunker (wife Maggie Techara); daughter, Lorie Wilson; grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Breanna Bunker, Matthew (wife Jessica) and Nicole Wilson, Jared (wife Stacy) Norgaard-Pedersen and Jennifer (husband Ryan) Smith; great-grandchildren, Hayden, Brock, Cooper, Layne, and Isabella; son-in-law, Steven Norgaard-Pedersen; sister, Marcia (husband Dan) Chinberg. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Debra Lynn Norgaard-Pedersen; son-in-law, Eldon Lee Wilson, Jr.; and brothers, Don and John Scott.
A funeral ceremony will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Central Congregational Church, 1248 SW Buchanan Street, Topeka. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Joan will lie in state after 1:00 p.m. Monday at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or Palliative Care at Stormont-Vail.
