Joan L. Shufelberger, 90, of Topeka, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 29, 2024. She was born June 20, 1934 in Kingman, Kansas, the daughter of Weldon Leon and Stella Marie (Ott) Settle.
Joan graduated from Kingman High School. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Washburn University and a Master’s Degree in Education from Kansas State University. She was an accomplished organist and gave private music lessons for many years, spreading her love for music. She served as the organist for the Highland Park United Methodist Church and later Lakeview Church of the Nazarene for many years. She was a member of Lakeview Church of the Nazarene, Highland Park United Methodist Church, Kansas Music Teachers Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Joan was a career teacher, bringing a love of learning to children at Highland Park Central Elementary School for most of her career.
Joan married Duane Shufelberger on June 6,1954 in Kingman. They were married for over 70 years. Other survivors include children, Steve (Cindy) Shufelberger of Lawrence, Linda Cuevas (Mark O’Neill) of Lawrence, and Scott (Lynette) Shufelberger of Wichita, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her sibling Leon Settle, and many other family members. Joan was preceded in death by her sister Carolyn, and infant brother Delbert.
Joan will be remembered for her joy, her service to community, her faithfulness, and the magical love of learning she created for children. Duane was the love of her life and her partner in all things.
A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, September 6, 2024 at Lakeview Church of the Nazarene. The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at Lakeview Church of the Nazarene. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Lakeview Church of the Nazarene at 2835 SE Croco Rd, Topeka, Kansas, 66605.
