Joan Arlene (Sheahon) Wood, 68, passed away unexpectedly into heaven and into the arms of her loving parents, Richard Leo and Arlene Mary Sheahon on January 16, 2018.
Joan was a dedicated wife, mother, sister, friend, and retired nurse practitioner. She was born July 30, 1949 in Atchison, Kansas. After growing up in Salina, Kansas, and graduating from Sacred Heart High School in 1967, Joan furthered her education at Stormont Vail School of Nursing, Washburn University, and was most proud of completing the degree of advanced family nurse practitioner.
Joan's career began in mental health nursing at Topeka's Menninger Hospital. Her career continued as Director of Education at Memorial Hospital, and she retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital as Director of the Women's Health Clinic.
On October 26, 1985, Joan married the love of her life, Terry Wood. They shared two children, Julia and Jess Wood.
Joan is survived by her husband, Terry Michael Wood, of the home, her son, Jess Wood and fiancée Rebecca Pickel, of Overland Park, Kansas, and her daughter, Julia Wood, of Lawrence, Kansas. She is also survived by her brothers, Richard Sheahon (Julie), Jack Sheahon (Anita), Mike Sheahon, Steve Sheahon (Bonnie), and sister Mary Pat Sheahon Weese (Jim). Also left to cherish her memory are numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Services will include a visitation from 2:00pm - 4:00pm on Sunday, January 21 at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel (3700 Wanamaker Road) in Topeka, Kansas, with a prayer of the Rosary directly following. The funeral will be at 10:30am at Most Pure Heart of Mary Church (3601 SW 17th Street) in Topeka, Kansas on Monday, January 22. Burial services will be located at St. Mary's Cemetery in Junction City at 1:30pm following the funeral.
