Joe David Cox, Jr., 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 15th, 2014 at Midland Care Hospice Center in Topeka KS, surrounded by his family.
'David' was born February 27, 1932 in Shreveport, Louisiana, the son of Coach J.D. Cox and Dorothy Barnes Cox. He was an active member of the Baptist church, and graduated with the Class of 1950 at Byrd High School.
Shortly after getting his degree from Baylor University, David married his high school sweetheart, and 'love of his life', Dolores Anne McFerren in 1955. They spent their first year of marriage in Germany, while he was stationed as an officer at Bitburg Air Force Base. Upon returning to the states, he completed his M.A. in Political Science at Baylor, and later earned his Ph.D from the University of Oklahoma.
A born teacher, David taught in the public school system for several years before becoming a professor of Political Science at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. He retired in 1993 after nearly 40 of teaching.
A lifelong Democrat, he served as Democratic County Chairman of Nacogdoches County for eight years; was a member of the Texas State Democratic Executive Committee, and participated in the 1980 Democratic National Convention.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dolores McFerren Cox; daughter, Kathy (Rick) Tague, of Topeka Kansas, and son, Steven Cox of Raleigh, NC. His grandchildren include Kari (Kyle) Brown, Caleb, Anna, Jamie and Andrew Tague; Conor and William Cox; a new great-grandson, Hudson Kyle Brown; and his niece, Dottie Holleman of Lafayette, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dot Cox Holleman.
David was a passionate student of life and a great lover of music, literature, history, travel and sports. He had a keen wit and sharp mind, as well as a special heart for those in need.
He was a loving father and grandfather and will be missed deeply by his family and friends.
Family Graveside services will be held at the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery in Topeka.
