Joel Edward Henderson, 67, of Topeka passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011.
He was born November 1, 1943 in Paris, TX, the son of Cleamon W. and Elizabeth (Frierson) Henderson, Sr.. He attended public school in Texas. He assisted his father on their farm in Texas for many years. He moved to Topeka in 1961. He was employed by American Linen in Topeka, retiring after 34 years.
Joel's long time companion, Bertha L. Holmes preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory his step-mother, Ora Lee Henderson; his daughter, Odessa Henderson; his step-children, Sam Holmes, Phillip Holloman, Edward Holloman, Joyce Ikiwoho, Charlie Holloman, Patricia Small and Odessa Henderson; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his siblings, Horace (Ella) Henderson, Thelma (Rufus) Lucas, Samuel (Mary) Henderson, Sr., Rhonda Frierson, Stanley Henderson, William Henderson, Irene Henderson, Annie Bostic, Mary Johnson, Becky (Cleo) McGinnis, Gerald Henderson, Jerry Johnson, Donnie (Diane) Johnson, Carl (Kandye) Johnson, Barbara Johnson, Julie Johnson and Frida Johnson; cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Mamie Rogers; brothers, Cleamon Henderson, Jr., Billy Joe Henderson, Fred Henderson, Michael Henderson, and sisters, Joyce Manning, Luvella Henderson.
Services will be 1 p.m., Monday, May 16, 2011 at the Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel, 2843 Minnesota Ave, Topeka. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Mr. Henderson will lie in state after 1 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home where the family will received friends from 4-6 p.m.
