John Atkinson

John W. Atkinson, 92, of Topeka, passed away, Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at Stormont-Vail Hospital.

He was born October 27, 1914 at Greenleaf, Kansas, the son of John and Jeannie Burns Atkinson. He graduated from Greenleaf High School in 1932.

Mr. Atkinson worked in the family business and on the Missouri Pacific Railroad prior to WWII. He served in the Army during WWII and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands. He lived in Clay Center until 1951 when he moved to Topeka.

Mr. Atkinson retired from Whelan Lumber Company after 28 years of service.

He was a charter member of Trinity Presbyterian Church and served as the church treasurer and an ordained elder.

John was married to K. Irene Patterson June 11, 1941 at Clifton, Kansas. She preceded him in death October 30, 1999. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Jay Clarke Atkinson, in 1945. Survivors include two sons, Dr. John P. Atkinson, St. Louis, MO; Kent P. Atkinson, Topeka; two daughters, Jane A. Schowengerdt, Scottsdale, AZ; Kay I. Wright, Clarendon Hills, IL; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, August 10, 2007 at Trinity Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel.
