Carl Edward John Gerriets, 90, formerly of Topeka, went home to the Lord October 17, 2014 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was born March 31, 1924, in Clay Center, Kansas to John Henry Theodor and Emma Anna Buck Gerriets. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Clay Center, and remained faithful to his Lord all of his life.
John graduated from Clay County Community High School in 1942. He worked on the farm while his brothers fought the war, then served in the US Army from 1946-1948. He received his B.S. from the University of Kansas in 1953 and M.A. from Stanford University in 1958. He taught at Marysville High School from 1952-1957 and at Utah State University from 1958-1963.
John married Barbara Ruth Hull Bryant on June 14, 1961, in Ogden, Utah. He did further graduate work at the University of Iowa from 1961-1963, then taught as a mathematics professor at Emporia State University from 1963-1989.
John was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and previously held various offices at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church. He was a member of honor fraternities Kappa Mu Epsilon and Pi Mu Epsilon, American Legion, and served on the Lyon County Metropolitan Zoning and Planning Commission.
John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and four sisters. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; children Carol (Craig) Prewett, Carl (Jill) Gerriets, Julia (David) Russ, and stepson, David Bryant; sister Louise (Don) Schmidt; and grandchildren Joshua (Nicole) Prewett, Andrew (Adilene) Prewett, and Nathan Russ.
Services will be at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Topeka, Kansas on October 22, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia.
