John H. Whightsil, 89, of Topeka, died Thursday, November 17, 2011. He was born April 27, 1922 in Osawatomie, KS to Phillip and Florence Whightsil.
John was a member of the "Greatest Generation". He served in the Pacific Theater with the US Army during WWII. Following his return from WWII, he married Harriet Livingston on January 1, 1946 in Garnett, KS. John worked a s a territory salesman for the Utah Motor Club, and after returning to Topeka in 1962, he worked as a salesman for AAA. He later worked as a C.L.U. with American Mutual Life. He belonged to the Masonic Delphian Lodge #44 in Garnett for 65 years. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Topeka, Orient of Kansas; and Westminster Presbyterian Church.
John is survived by his wife, Harriet; two children, Donna Marie Waltzer, Van John Whightsil; two grandchildren, Stacey and David Waltzer; great-grandson, Eric Jason Orenlichter. He was preceded in death by a grandson, John Paul Whightsil; his parents, one brother and one sister.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 21, at Dove Cremation & Funeral Service, 4020 SW 6th Ave. Topeka, KS 66606. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Helping Hands Humane Society, the Topeka Rescue Mission, or Westminster Presbyterian Church.
