John M. "Big J" Thornbrugh, 68, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2010. He was born on June 12, 1942 at Lomax, KS, the son of Willard and Zola Clark Thornbrugh. He graduated from Williamsburg High School.
He was a Navy veteran, serving on the U.S.S. Midway. John was employed by Rural Development Company at Forbes Field. He was a member of Capitol Post No. 1 of the American Legion.
John married Kathy Orr on May 29, 1992. She survives. Other survivors include his children; Julie Belt, Shelly Mason, John T. Thornbrugh, Daniel Orr, 13 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, two brothers and one sister. John was preceded in death by his son, Tony Anderson Thornbrugh, one granddaughter, Nicole and one grandson, Mason.
A celebration of John's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the John M. Thornbrugh Memorial Fund c/o Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave., Topeka, KS 66605 to be designated at a later date.
