John Lee Meyer

January 12, 1925 — October 5, 2019

John Lee Meyer, 94, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at McCrite Plaza. He was born January 12, 1925 in Phillipsburg, Kansas, the son of John B. and Bedah M. (Harold) Meyer.

John was a WWII Army Veteran. He received the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star Medal For Valor. He played a significant role in the design of the courtroom for the Nuremberg Trials. He documented his war time experiences in his book titled Reflections of a "Dogface". After he was discharged from the service, he earned a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Kansas. John was employed by the State of Kansas Department Of Transportation as an Engineer for 37 years prior to retiring in 1987. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Orient Lodge No. 51 AF&AM, Topeka Scottish Rite Bodies (Thirty-third Degree Inspectors General Honorary), the Arab Shriners, the Arab Shriners Director's Staff, Order of Quetzalcoatl Cholula Teocali No. 8 and the Royal Order of Jesters, Topeka Court 125.

John married Catharine "Lee" Gouldthread in October, 1953. She preceded him in death in April, 1982. He later married Marilyn Maxedon on February 14, 1996 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include children, Robert (Leona) Meyer, John (Linda) Meyer, Jr., Brenda (Steve) Bradley, five grandchildren, Dara, Andrew, Cassie, Chris and Connor, four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Memphis, Benjamin and Molly, step-children, Jane (Darrin) McCall, Steve Kaesler, three step-grandchildren, Connor, Gabrielle and Drake. Also surviving are his two sisters, Jean Bracken and Donna Peate.

John was preceded in death by his step-daughter, Andrea Kaesler in July, 2007.

John will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. and Rose Croix Services will be presented at 6:30 p.m. by Topeka Scottish Rite Bodies.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 10, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church, 817 SW Harrison St., Topeka, Kansas 66612. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, 3616 SW 6th Ave. where Masonic Services will be presented by Orient Lodge No. 51 AF&AM and Military Honors will be presented by the Kansas National Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the First Presbyterian Church, 817 SW Harrison St., Topeka, Kansas 66612 or to the Shriners Hospital For Children, 4400 Clayton Rd., St. Louis, Missouri 63110.
