John M. Sowers

John M. Sowers passed away on Monday, February 14, 2022. He was born to Fred S. Sowers and Gladys M. Bain on March 23, 1931 at Dunlap, KS Preceding him in death were his parents, three sisters; Rachel 1. Thompson 1966; Bertha I Young 1994; R. Hazel White, 2000 and one brother Fred Duane Sowers Jan 1939. He attended the Dunlap Grade School and graduated Dunlap Rural High School in May 1949.

He was a member of the Methodist Church in Dunlap. He enlisted in the U. S Army in Feb 1951 and served in Korea where he served until May 1952 then transferred to Ft. Riley, KS until being shipped to Germany. Upon returning to the USA he was discharged at Ft. Knox, KY on Jan 4, 1954. Mr. Sowers was a clerk/carrier at the post office in Council Grove for nearly 5 1/2 yrs. He became Morris county undersheriff serving under Wayne Brooks for about 3 1/2 yrs before moving to Texas to work on microwave towers for various companies in Dallas County, TX. In Jan 1992 he returned to Kansas and went to work for Niehoff Htg. & Air in Lawrence until he retired in 2001. He most recently resided at Rose Villa in Topeka, KS.

He is survived by one sister; Gladys Mae Crandell of Seattle, WA: 5 nieces, Diane Niehoff of Baldwin City, KS; Peggy Ann Thompson of Honolulu, HI; Mary A. Otte of Salina, KS; Alice Clark, of NM, and Donna Pilloud of WA; 9 nephews, Michael L., C. Samuel and J. Daniel Young all of Council Grove, KS; Frank F. Thompson of Mt. Vernon, WA; Kenneth R. White, of NE; Thomas B White of NM; Scott, Steve and Stanley Crandell of Seattle, WA. One niece, Kathy Thompson and one nephew, Donald R. Thompson preceded him in death.

For years he worked on his family genealogy which he devoted much of his time to. He surrounded his home with his love of flowers, as did his mother.

Memorial services will be held at the Dunlap Cemetery at a later date; to be announced.
