John E. "Jack" Springstead, 80, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2018. He was born August 4, 1938 in Topeka, the son of John M. and Flora M. (Dunaway) Springstead.
Jack graduated from Topeka High School in 1956 and attended Washburn University. He was an Army Veteran and was assigned to the 793rd Military Police Battalion in Germany. Jack managed Highland Crest Bowl for 15 years and was later employed by Capital City Moving & Storage, retiring in 2010.
In 1972, Jack and Sharon Sharp were married in Miami, Oklahoma. To this union, they were blessed with a daughter, Shawna. Shawna married her husband, Ryan Schiffelbein and they have two daughters, Michaela and Keira. Jack enjoyed watching his granddaughters grow up and play sports. He is also survived by his brother, Jay Springstead of Mexia, Texas.
Jack was proud of being the second baseman for the state champions Mosby Mack American Legion All Stars in 1955 and 1956. He also played second base at the division level fast pitch softball team representing the 8th division for the Baumholder Infantry, Germany, in the World Military Tournament. Jack was also an accomplished bowler producing three city titles, seven state titles and participated in five national events. He bowled several 300 games and earned many top ten achievements. He was elected to the Topeka Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1990.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.
