Josephine Layvonne Clayton, 71, of Topeka, was called Home by the Lord on Saturday, March 12, 2011 in the comfort of her own home. She was born June 16, 1939 in Naples, TX, the daughter of Joseph and Lottie Whetstone. She was raised by the Reverend Nathaniel and Novella Jackson.
She has resided in Topeka for most of her life and was a member of New Jersalem Missionary Baptist Church. Josephine married Cecil Clayton. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Willa Young and her brother; Luther Whetstone. Survivors include her children; Anthony Whetstone Jones of Rowlett, TX, Connye jo Clayton of Topeka, Darryl Clayton of Pekin, IL, Yolanda Johnson of Topeka, Rodney Clayton of Topeka, Cecil Clayton, Jr. of Leavenworth, Cebreonza Clayton of Topeka and NaSharra and Sharra Thomas of Topeka, a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her siblings; Virgil Conway of Topeka, Billie Whetstone of Killeen, TX, Wilma Hubbard of Topeka, Precious Crowder of Topeka, Bobby Whetstone of Omaha, TX, Clyde Whetstone of Topeka, and Charles Whetstone of Topeka.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Burial will follow in Topeka Cemetery. Josephine will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
