Juanita (Northington) Jones, 94, Topeka, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014.
She was born November 18, 1919, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the daughter of Willis and Minnie (Bray) Jones.
At age five, Juanita and her family moved to Kansas City, Kansas where she attended Kansas City Public Schools. She graduated from Madam C.J. Walker Beauty School in 1944 and Noles Barber College in 1946, both in Kansas City, Missouri. She was a licensed cosmetologist for over 50 years. Juanita moved to Topeka in 1960.
Survivors include four daughters, Karen Head Emery (Robert), Deborah Rayford Richardson (Adrian), Donna Rayford, Glenda Northington Nickerson, 18 grandchildren, Khalil Islam, M. Tyrone Yates, Gayland (Vanessa) Moten, Jamie Moten, Michael Moten, Steven (Kim) Moten, Kent Emery, Chad (Heather) Emery, James Emery, Tya Richardson Tiller, Rahneisha Richardson, Abdul-Rahmaan Saleem, II, Rodney Rayford, Raquel Roberts, Rahnel Rayford, Janelle Nickerson, Jevenee (Joseph)Nickerson Forshee, Jeremy Nickerson, 46 great-grandchildren, 36 great-great grandchildren, three great-great-great grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Kathleen Jones and Evelyn Jones and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her two children, James Jones and Patricia Moten, three husbands, Edward Head, George Northington and Walter Jones, five siblings, Irene Lewis, Bernice Sears, Willis Jones, Jr., Alex Jones and William Jones, two grandchildren, Reginald Moten and Rico Richardson and one great-grandchild, Michael Yates.
A wake will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 21 at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Private graveside services will be at Mount Auburn Cemetery.
