Julia Cathern Henderson

Julia Cathern Henderson, 83, of Topeka passed away June 25, 2011, at Midland Care Hospice in Topeka.

A 9:00 a.m. funeral service will be at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka, KS on Wednesday, June 29, 2011. Mrs. Henderson will lie in state after 3:00 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. A graveside service will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Webb City, Mo., on Wednesday, June 29 at 3:00 p.m.

Julia was born to Nina and A. Parker Russell of Stone's Corner in Joplin, Mo., on April 15, 1928. She was the third of four children. She graduated in 1946 from Webb City High School in Webb City, Mo., and attended junior college in Joplin. Julia married James D. Henderson of Joplin on Sept. 30, 1949. They moved to Topeka in 1949.

Julia was actively involved in music and the performing arts. She played piano and French horn, volunteered for several years at the Topeka Civic Theatre (board member 1981-1984), took dance lessons through the Dorothy Thomas School of Dance, and attended Topeka Symphony Orchestra concerts and numerous dance recitals, school concerts and plays featuring her beloved grandchildren.

Julia was also a skilled cook and gardener and an avid crafter who sewed, created needlepoints and decoupage, and painted. Her creativity was passed on to her children, who went on to pursue careers and interests in writing, design and craft work. She will be profoundly missed.

Julia is survived by her three children, Jennifer Henderson (George Eberhart) of Chicago, Jill Jepson (Barry) of Harveyville, and Jaime Henderson (Carolyn) of Topeka; her older brother, Charles Russell (Joan) of Merriam; her eight grandchildren, Beau, Laurel, Kristi, Natalie, Kerri, Alex, Catherine and Katie; her ex-husband James Henderson of Topeka; five nieces and one nephew; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her older sister, Betty Russell of Joplin and her younger brother, William Russell (Anne) of Le Sueur, Minn.
