June Frances Schlotz Wilks, passed away February 24, 2021 at Presbyterian Manor in Topeka, Kansas.
She was born January 17, 1931, in Emporia, Kansas, and grew up in Marion, Kansas, the daughter of Ted and Eva Wilks Schlotz. She married in 1951 and divorced in 1974, at which time she changed her name to her mother's maiden name. She retired from Sprint's Public and Governmental Affairs Department in Topeka in 1996.
June was active in theatre for many years as "Fran" Wilks - both on-stage and behind the scenes at Showcase, Player's Company, Gage Park, and Topeka Civic and in the cast of The Drunkard. She was also a free-lance writer for Montgomery Publications. June took an active role in her church and community, serving as church treasurer, deacon, Bible school teacher, circle leader and was a member of the chancel and hand bell choirs. She also sang with The Notables. In the schools, she served on the PTA Board, organized yearly fun-night fund-raisers, and was a room mother. She was a Cub Scout den mother for six years. June volunteered in the hospital gift shop, on a YMCA building drive and various other causes. She was treasurer of a Republican central committee and worked on various political campaigns. June was a delegate to the 1975 National Federation of Republican Women's convention in Dallas, where then-Governor Ronald Regan was keynote speaker.
But her greatest joy was her family, who were always first on her agenda. Survivors include her three sons, Merlin Greenawalt (Gail), Lawrence, Kansas; Gary (Joanne), Loveland, Colorado; and Keith (Lori), Springfield, Illinois; 5 grandchildren - Dustin, Ryan, Angella, Lee, and Damian, 1 great grandson and 1 great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers: Don Schlotz in 1995 and Bill Schlotz in 1999.
She will be interred at Topeka Memorial Park Cemetery in the Garden of Prayer on April 16, 2021 at 9:00 AM. Cremation has taken place.
