Karen K. Deeter, 78, Saratoga Springs, KY, passed away Friday, October 6. 2017.
Karen was born on June 8, 1939, to the late Vail and Helen Deeter in Topeka. She attended school in Topeka and graduated from the University of Kansas with a music education degree. She completed graduate work at Boston University and received a Master's Degree in Humanities from Long Island University. Following graduation, she took a vocal music teaching position in the elementary schools in Patchogue, Long Island where she remained for 32 years until she retired.
Karen was passionate about teaching. Collaborating with the school art teacher, Karen and Chuck created a special program incorporating art, movement, vocal music, instrumental music, and circus arts called Center Ring. This program met before and after regular school hours. Center Ring received accolades from top people in all walks of the humanities, not to mention the children and their parents. To support students looking to study music at college, Karen organized the district music teachers into a performing group called Friends of the Arts to award a scholarship each year.
After retiring from teaching, Karen spent 20 years in the Catskill Mountains as Town Historian for the Town of Lexington Historical Society which had been dormant for many years. The time came to leave the mountains and return to the benefits of city living, so Karen moved to Saratoga Springs, NY in the Fall of 2016, looking forward to the myriad of events and happenings in her new location. She took full advantage of the wonders of Saratoga Springs for the one year she had and said everyday how much she loved being there.
Karen is survived by two brothers, Kelly and Kirby and their wives; several nieces; nephews; great nieces and nephews; many cousins; and her long time, very best friend who will miss her terribly.
Karen's soul is with the Lord she loved. Her body was cremated so her ashes could go home to Kansas and also remain in New York.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, 2018 at Dove Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. A reception will follow the service.
