Katherine "Kathy" Ann Campbell, 64, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, May 9, 2013 after a long battle with illness. Kathy was born February 14, 1949 in Council Grove, KS to Maria "Big Mary" Tomas and Henry Campbell.
She came to Topeka in 1961 and attended East Topeka Jr. High and Highland Park High School. Kathy spent her life as a caregiver to her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Carol Walwyn; brother, Harold Lee Roundtree; daughters, Tracey Vann, Rochelle Vann, Cynthia Vann and son, Charles Heard. Survivors include husband, Ernest Shepard, Jr.; sons, Kenneth Vann of Topeka and Keith Bentley of Liberal, KS; daughter, Rosa Heard of Topeka; step-son, Ernest Shepard, III of Kansas City, KS; step-daughters, Jonice Taylor of Kansas City, KS and Angela Shepard of Topeka; sisters, Ernestine Bennett of Denver, CO; Winona Shepard of Kansas City, MO; Leona Ray Zapata of Tacoma, WA; Barbara Jean Zapata and Starr Jones, both of Topeka; brothers, Jenaro Zapata, John Broyles and Dwayne Anderson all of Topeka; ten grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and a host of nieces and nephews.
She will be remembered for her tell it like it is attitude, remarkable bingo skills and her renditions of "On Top of Old Smokey".
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at East Eighth Street Baptist Church, 801 SE Wear St., Topeka, KS 66607. Private inurnment will take place at a later date. Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel is assisting the family.
