Kay H. Kountze

Kay H. Kountze, 73, of Topeka, formerly of Denver, passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2007 at Midland Hospice House. A loving and most caring person, Kay will be greatly missed by all who knew her and all who had a chance to experience her quiet, random acts of kindness.

Kay was born December 11, 1933 in Carl Junction, MO, the daughter of John and Nellie Dixon Howard. She moved to Denver in 1951 after graduating from Baxter Springs High School and, in 1959, married Harold Kountze Jr. While living in Denver Kay was an active member of St. Martha's Alter Guild for over 20 years. In 1996 she served as the chair of the fund-raising committee in support of a major addition to the facilities of the Episcopal Church of St. Gabriel the Archangel, Cherry Hills, Colorado. She was also a part of the executive committee of the board of The Denver Dumb Friends League for over 15 years, where she was Chair of the Building Committee that raised the funding for and supervised the construction of their first major renovation to the animal care and adoption facilities.

Kay moved to Topeka in 1997 after her husband Harold's death. There she was a member and supporter of the Topeka Association for Retarded Citizens and was a volunteer for their Winter Wonderland Project. Kay also sponsored two therapy dogs which assist individuals with special need and was a member of the Mulvane Art Museum. While living in Topeka, she attended First United Methodist Church.

Kay was also preceded in death by her step-daughter, Elizabeth Idema. Survivors include her sister, Mary Ann Trask, Coffeyville, KS; two step-daughters, Louise Kountze-vonSchlegell, Traverse City, MI and Anne Thompson, Haslett, MI; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Cremation is planned. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on August 25 at Fairmont Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to Topeka Association for Retarded Citizens, 2701 SW Randolph Ave, Topeka KS 66611; or to the Denver Dumb Friends League, 2080 S.
