Kay Hayes Welchhans, 72, of Berryton, peacefully passed away with family by her side on Sunday, August 1, 2021 at a Topeka hospital. She was born September 15, 1948 in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Charles and Martha (Vandivort) Hayes.

Kay attended Salem High School in Salem, Missouri, Southwest Missouri State, and TWA Airline Stewardess Training. She retired from the Washburn University Criminal Justice Department in 2004 where she was the department secretary.
Kay loved to travel. From her time as a stewardess to her many adventures traveling around the country and the Caribbean in her retirement.

Kay married James Coen in 1969. Kay is survived by her husband John Welchhans who she married in 1999.

She was very proud of her family. She is survived by her sister, Carol Webster of Salem, Missouri, her children and spouses, Jeff (Becky) Coen, David (Lisa) Coen along with her step-sons, Michael (Diane) Welchhans and Chris (Jessica) Welchhans, 7 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

As per Kay's wishes, cremation has taken place and private inurnment will take place in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Children's Mercy Hospital Resource Development Department, 2401 Gillham, Kansas City, Missouri 64108.

Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. is assisting the family with arrangements.
