Kenneth Leroy Berends, 72, beloved husband, father, grandfather, big brother, uncle and son-in-law, passed away at his home on May 9, 2013 after a 15 year battle with cancer.
Kenneth was born May 1, 1941 in Topeka, KS to Jackson A. and Virginia (Day) Berends. He attended Seaman High School, served from 1960 to 1964 in the United States Marines, and worked for Goodyear for 35 years before retiring.
On April 16, 1966, he married Linda Charles Kay Goodwin and from this marriage 2 sons were born,
Michael and Milburn. Kenneth and his sons were baptized in 1977 and, along with Linda, became members of Topeka Bible Church. Kenneth was active in Boy Scouts of America with both of his sons achieving rank of
Eagle Scout.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jackie Melvin Berends. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Linda of the home; sons Michael (Cathy) of Baldwin City, KS and Milburn of Goddard, KS; grandsons Ryan, Brent, Samuel, and Nicholas; sisters Patricia (Robbie) Robinson and Mary Seaver; brother Bruce (Debbie) Berends: mother-in-law Martha Goodwin; 13 nephews and nieces; and his Vizsla buddy, Pete. Kenneth enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling. He will be remembered as a devoted husband and father, a doting grandfather, a beloved uncle and a mischievous prankster.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, May 13 at Topeka Bible Church, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in Rochester Cemetery.
