Kurt Douglas Nieman, 66, of Topeka, passed away on Monday, June 18, 2018 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka. He was born September 27, 1951 in Topeka, the son of Elmer L. "Butch" and Mary J. (Smith) Nieman.
Kurt graduated from Topeka High School in 1970. He earned an Associate's Degree from Fort Scott Junior College. He then went on to the University of Kansas where he graduated in 1974. Kurt played quarterback for both football teams leading Fort Scott to a championship and was inducted into the Fort Scott Hall of Fame. He earned an additional BA Degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech University in 1989.
Kurt was employed by the City of Topeka from 1992 before retiring in 2016. He was well known for participating in and officiating for several local athletic organizations.
Kurt married Rachel Sarah Pearson on June 27, 2016 after a 15 year courtship. She survives. Other survivors include two sisters, Holle Baskett of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jan Smith of Overland Park, Kansas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Dove Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave. with a reception to follow at the chapel. Private inurnment will take place at a later date.
