Kyle C. Kofoid

Kyle C. Kofoid, 51, of Topeka, Kansas, lost his long battle with depression on September 27, 2020. He was born October 12, 1968, in Mitchell, South Dakota, to Charles M. and Helen D. (Halstead) Kofoid.
Kyle liked to say he grew up "all over," because he and his family lived in Wisconsin, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Iowa. He graduated from high school in Lamoni, Iowa, then moved to Pittsburg, Kansas, where he received his undergraduate degree in accounting from Pittsburg State University. While at PSU, he worked in the financial aid office, where he created an office scandal by dating a coworker. He and that coworker, Cathy S. Hague, married on August 24, 1991, in Newton, Kansas. She survives and misses him terribly.
In January 1991, Kyle landed his dream job at the Internal Revenue Service, where he worked in collection and review for more than 29 years at the Topeka office. He was a proud Federal employee who made many beloved IRS friends throughout the United States. He never minded IRS jokes, of which there were many, especially on his wife's side of the family. To them, he was lovingly known as a "revenuer."
Kyle was a loving father to his children, Julia and Eli. They lost him too soon and will miss his humor, his quirky fashion sense (brightly colored Hawaiian shirts, obscure superhero t-shirts, Converse sneakers, and Crocs), and most of all, his passion for and dedication to being their dad. He was active in their lives, volunteering at elementary school libraries, helping with math and history homework, and attending their sporting and music events.
While a fan of major league baseball and the NHL, Kyle particularly loved attending local sporting events. He was a Topeka Capitals baseball fan and attended many Topeka hockey games, cheering for the Scarecrows, Roadrunners, and Pilots. Even more than sports, Kyle enjoyed all kinds of music. He and Cathy attended many classic rock concerts together in Kansas and Missouri.
Kyle was an avid comic book collector and liked to point out that he and Batman were mysteriously never seen in the same room together. He had a love for classic horror, science fiction, and detective literature and film. A fan of all things pop culture, Kyle was fondly referred to by his wife as "adorkable," and those who knew him would surely agree.
A 15-year member of Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church, Kyle served faithfully in many capacities: chairing missions and trustee committees, serving on finance committee, volunteering in the nursery and for Vacation Bible Camp, and teaching adult Sunday school classes.
In addition to his wife, Cathy, and children, Julia and Eli, Kyle is survived by two sisters, Jodi (Chris) Scarpa of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and Lori Kofoid of Ithaca, New York; one brother, Shon (Jess) Kofoid of Lamoni, Iowa; and two brothers-in-law, Barth (Betty) Hague of Newton, Kansas, and Brian (Tonya) Hague of Overland Park, Kansas. Kyle is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews and six great-nieces and nephews. He was a loving and tolerant dog dad to Sadie, Lucky, and Lola, of the home.
The family will greet friends and loved ones during a visitation from 5:00-7:00 pm on Friday, October 9, 2020, at Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church, 7433 SW 29th St., Topeka, KS 66614.
The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2020, at Susanna Wesley United Methodist Church, 7433 SW 29th St., Topeka, KS 66614. All are welcome online for the service's live stream on the Susanna Wesley UMC Facebook Page at: facebook.com/SWUMCTopeka. Please wear a mask and practice social distancing at the visitation and funeral.
