Larry L. Baker, 87, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
Born on June 2, 1937 to Leon and Susie (Decker) Baker of Independence, Kansas, Larry graduated from Wyandotte High School before attending Kansas State University where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and Physical Science in 1959.
Larry retired from Topeka Public Schools in 1995 after teaching secondary math and science for 32 years. His years of service as an educator included Kansas City Public Schools (1959-1964) and Topeka Public Schools (1968-1995).
Larry was an active member of Brookwood Covenant Church serving as church chair and teaching Sunday School. He was also a member of the National Education Association, National Science Teachers Association, and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics as well as their Kansas affiliations.
Larry celebrated 59 years of marriage to Alma Schweitzer after being married on June 26, 1965 in Derby, KS. He is survived by Alma; sons Brian (Joy) Baker, Mark (Lynette) Baker, and Scott (Michelle) Baker; granddaughters Blaire Baker and Lizzie Baker. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Russell Baker.
Larry enjoyed tending his garden, eating gooseberry pie, reading, solving math problems, and observing wildlife. In his passing this week, he avoided having to endure another daylight-saving time change, which plagued him for 50 years.
Larry’s wishes were for cremation. A memorial ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Mount Hope Cemetery & Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW 17th St., Topeka, Kansas with a reception to follow.
