Larry Charles Cheek, 50, Auburn, passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2008 at Midland Hospice House.
Larry was born September 7, 1957 in Hiawatha, the eldest son of Larry L. and Joyce E. Cheek. He grew up in the Hiawatha area and later in Hoyt, graduating from Royal Valley High School in 1976.
He was employed by the Kansas Department of Transportation as a Senior Engineering Technician for over 30 years.
He was an active member of Victory Tabernacle, K.O. S. E. and a past member of the Topeka Bow Hunter's Club. He was the founder and honorary lifetime president of the Topeka Kite Flyers. He enjoyed cooking, fishing, performing magic tricks, skydiving, and gardening. His greatest joy was his grandchildren.
Larry married Alisa Griffith on February 3, 1989 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include step-children, Shane (Tracy) Maendele, Topeka, Alyssa Monson, Auburn; grandchildren, James and Jayden; sisters, Lana (Don) Dillner, Hoyt, Jan (Jeff) Stephenson, Topeka; brothers, Danny and Donnie Cheek of Hoyt; and his beloved English Bulldogs, Abbey, Lightning and Dozer. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Victory Tabernacle, 2622 SE 6th, Topeka. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha. Larry will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
