Larry V. Dykes, 71, of Topeka, passed away Friday, November 18, 2016.
He was born June 24, 1945, in Falls City, Nebraska, the son of Leonard and Stella (Corning) Dykes. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1963. He served in the Marine Corps Reserve during the Vietnam War.
Larry was employed by the City of Topeka Fire Department for 20 years, retiring in 1985. He also served as the Operations Manager for Mayfair Condominiums, while operating his own property maintenance service.
Larry married Dinah Zumbrum on January 29, 1977 in Topeka, KS.
Survivors include his wife, Dinah Dykes; sons, Paul Dykes (Tiffany), Steven Dykes, and Chris Dykes (Jill); daughter, Kelly Unrein (John), grandchildren, Beckham Dykes, Ryann Lucas, Kyle Sommers, Hannah Dykes, and Skyler Dykes. He is also survived by several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Larry was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church.
Larry loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and attending their sporting and school events was very important to him.
In his earlier years, he played high school basketball and football, and American Legion baseball.He also played City League Softball with Sounds Great Stereo. In later years he enjoyed traveling, playing golf, fishing, coaching little league baseball at SCABA. Larry was an avid St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers and KU basketball fan. He was a music enthusiast and enjoyed attending concerts, as well as going to casinos.
Larry was cremated. A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at the Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel, 2843 S.E. Minnesota Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66605.
