Larry L. Henning, 77, passed away November 20, 2017 at his home in Topeka, Kansas. He was the son of Erich C. and Gwen C. (Amspacker) Henning of Glasco, Kansas. He was born May 18, 1940 at the country home built by his father and grandfather. He attended Eureka country school through 6th grade, and went to Glasco Elementary for 7th and 8th grade. He graduated from Glasco High School in 1958.
After high school he worked for Benton Jones, a local farmer. He married Janet Larson on June 10, 1962 at the Baptist Church in Concordia, Kansas. He then worked for the Cloud County Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator. On August 2, 1962, he and his cousin, Marvin Henning, joined the Kansas Army National Guard and were sent to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri for basic training. Larry was then sent to Ft. Lewis, Washington for the remainder of his basic training.
Upon returning to Concordia, he worked for the Cloud County Co-op Elevator. June 6, 1969, Larry and his family moved to Topeka and he bgan work for the Capitol Area Security Patrol as a patrolman. CASP later became Capitol Police, a division of the Kansas Highway Patrol. Larry and Janet began their work for the State of Kansas on the same day and they retired the same day, Sept. 6, 1996. Larry retired as a Sergeant with 27 years of service with the state.
After his retirement, he and his wife started a home based craft business and participated in craft shows throughout Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri. They also sold wholesale to many craft shops in Kansas. When they weren't doing craft shows, Larry worked for the Kansas Legislature as a Sergeant-At-Arms for the House of Representatives.
Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Janet; his daughter, Janea (Johnny) Lawrence, Chanute, KS; his son, Erich (Spicey) Henning, Scranton, KS; 5 grandchildren: Spec. Justin Lawrence, US Army Ft. Bragg, NC, Jeana Lawrence, Chanute, KS, Jaymi Lawrence, Manhattan, KS, Tyler Thornton, Scranton, KS, and Andrew Henning, Scranton, KS; sister, Betty (Jim) Wild, Manhattan, KS, brother-in-law, Dean Williams, Concordia, KS, Brother-in-law, Bob Larson, Medicine Lodge, KS; sister-in-law, Joyce (Gerald) Hansen, Colby, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Joyce Williams, Janet's parents, Wilbur and Esther Larson, 2 sisters-in-law: Emalyn Wartman and Charlene Larson.
A celebration of life service will be held Friday, November 24, 11:00 a.m. at the Berryton United Methodist Church, 7010 SE Berryton Rd. Berryton, KS. Private interment will be held at a later date.
