Larry W. Magill, Jr., 61, of Topeka, Kansas passed away January 6, 2010, under the care of Midland Hospice. Larry was born on November 30, 1948, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Larry W. Magill and Marjorie M. (Holm) Magill Haub. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Economics in 1970 and served in the Kansas National Guard. He married Carrie A. Rinas on January 26, 1969, in Manhattan, Kansas.
In 1970, Larry began a long career in the insurance industry with United States Fidelity and Guaranty; Gilbert – Magill Company; Fireman's Fund; Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America; AMS Users Group; and the Kansas Association of Insurance Agents. He was active with the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce; United Way of Greater Topeka; past President of the Kansas Society of Association Executives; former Chair of the Big I state association executives' organization (IAAE); former Chairman of the Kansas Insurance Education Foundation Board of Trustees; and served on the Board of Directors of the Topeka Independent Business Association (TIBA).
Larry shared his passion for fishing, hunting and the outdoors with his family and friends throughout his life. He was an avid tennis player and golfer, and always included others in his frequent fishing trips and occasional expeditions to Canada and Minnesota. Larry was passionate about both his work and his hobbies and always found the balance in both. He will be remembered as a man who tried to live every day to the fullest, and who was generous and giving in his devotion to his friends and family.
Larry was predeceased by his father, Larry W. Magill, Sr., grandfathers Laurus A. Magill and Ivar E. Holm, and grandmothers Evelyn A. Magill and Birttie Elizabeth Holm.
Larry is survived by Carrie, his wife of forty years, and his sons Daniel L. Magill (Natalie) of Lawrence, Kansas and Mark E. Magill of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by his mother Marjorie M. and stepfather Harold H. Haub of Leawood, Kansas; and his brothers Stephen H. (Marie) Magill of Rochelle, Illinois; Kent B. (Tess) Magill of Kansas City, Missouri; Richard S. (Sarah) Magill of Naperville, Illinois; his sister Marla A. (Kevin) Leeper of The Hills, Texas; many nieces and nephews, and a large and loving extended family.
A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Road, Prairie Village, Kansas 66208.
