Larry Dean Smith I, 84, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2024.

He was born March 6, 1940, in Bellville, Kansas, the son of Lawrence Mac and Elizabeth Anne (Munson) Smith. When Larry was old enough to enlist, he proudly joined the United States Army. He served his country until 1964.

He married Elizabeth Dodds in Topeka, Kansas. They had six children, Larry Dean II, Laurie, Becky, Scott, Rhonda and Allen.

Larry worked for various companies as a truck driver. His last job was with Kansas Sand.

He was known as 2 Speed on the CB radio. Larry enjoyed drawing, painting and leather working. He loved reading about military history and watching military history shows. He enjoyed studying his family history and was constructing a family tree to pass down to his family. He would often study world maps and his old trucking routes that he had driven previously.

Larry leaves behind his children, Laurie Smith, Scott (Angela) Smith, Rhonda (Bob) Shibley, Allen Smith; daughter in-law, Janet Smith; his grandchildren, Amanda McDermott, Samuel Smith, Samantha O’Handlen, Megan Smith, Danielle Smith, William Bruton, Erika Bruton, Chelsea Smith, Bradley Smith, Allen Smith Jr., Gina Smith, Charles Smith, Jared Drain and Justin Drain; 19 great grandchildren; his siblings, Joelene, Jennie, Dalene, Betty and Shirley. He was preceded in passing by his son, Larry Smith II; daughter, Becky Smith; one grandchild, Deanna Smith; his parents; two sisters, Louise and Caroline and his previous spouse, Elizabeth Falter.

A graveside service with military honors will take place on Monday, July 15, 2024 at 10:00am at Liberty Cemetery, 2101 Elm Road, Bellville, Kansas. In his honor, memorial contributions can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
