Laura Imogene "Gene" Semler, 87, Topeka, passed away Monday, October 19, 2015 at Midland Hospice House.
Laura was born December 28, 1927 in Sparks, OK, the daughter of Jesse and Lena (Beckman) Steppe. Her beloved foster parents were Thomas and Jesse Bruner. She graduated from Miltonvale High School and received her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from Washburn University.
She taught Biology and Home Economics at Melvern and Meriden High Schools in Kansas. She taught 5th & 6th grade at Sheldon and Quincy Elementary and science at Chase Middle School in USD-501, retiring in 1989.
She was a member of First Baptist Church since 1945, active in the Berean Sunday School class and missionary circle. She was also a member of The National Education Association, KNEA, NEA-T and T.A.R.S.P. She was a docent at the Kansas State Historical Museum.
She enjoyed traveling, Square dancing, quilting, gardening and took her grandsons biking across Kansas.
Laura married Marvin E. Semler on June 3, 1950. He died in 1983. Survivors include children, Becky S. (Don) Edson, Shawnee, KS, Jeffrey M. (Beth) Semler, Pine Hill, NJ, Cheryl A. (Ted) Mitchell, Auburn, KS; grandchildren, Suzanne Edson Waithaka, Stephen D. Edson, Benjamin Lambertus, Haley Mitchell, Laura E. Semler, Jesse Semler; and great-grandchildren, Laura, Daniel & Jacob Edson, Bella, Kaya & Emma Lambertus and Grace Anne Waithaka. She was also preceded in death by siblings, Mabel Rogers, Georgia Steppe and Raymond Steppe.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at First Baptist Church, 3033 SW MacVicar. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church or the Washburn University Alumni Scholarship Fund.
