Lauren Blaine Figgins

December 3, 1931 — September 9, 2017

Lauren Blaine "Larry" Figgins, son of Jesse Lois "Pat" Figgins and Edna Esther (Root) Figgins was born in Topeka, Kansas on Dec 3, 1931. He was named after his great uncle Henry Blaine Hurst, (his paternal grandmother's brother). He was baptised on Easter Eve Mar 26, 1932 and confirmed on Apr 13, 1941 by Dean John Warren Day. Larry celebrated the Episcopal faith his entire life, actively involved in both Grace Episcopal Cathedral and St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Topeka as well as the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Holton, Kansas. His strength of faith undoubtedly was influenced heavily by his mother, and his grandmother (Helen Wilson Reynolds) whose father (Rev. Charles Reynolds) founded the Trinity Episcopal Church in Lawrence, Kansas.

Larry grew up in Topeka, with his older brother Jerald Irving and his younger brother Donald Charles. When Larry was in high school, he and his brothers welcomed three Cox sisters via adoption: Patricia Ann, Mary Lou, and Jeanne Marie. At the beginning of his Senior Year at Highland Park High School, the family moved to Holton, Kansas. Larry continued to commute to Topeka his senior year, graduating with Highland Park High School's class of 1949.

Larry enlisted in the US Navy on Feb 11, 1952 and was stationed stateside in San Diego, California until his honorable discharge on Feb 10, 1956. During his proud Navy service, he worked as a Dental Technician and earned the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

Larry settled into his 30 year career as a psychiatric aide and supervisor with Kansas Neurological Institute in Topeka in 1966. He retired in 1996 which allowed him to settle into his beloved mini farm (shared with his brother, Don) in Meriden, Kansas where he enjoyed tending to his miniature horses, nurturing his alfalfa, and watching old westerns. He also enjoyed volunteer work for organizations such as Let's Help.

He passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sep 9, 2017 at 6:35PM at the Healthcare Resort of Topeka. Survivors include brothers: Jerald Irving Figgins (Willow Street, Pennsylvania) and Donald Charles (Mary Beth Dunhaupt) Figgins (Meriden, Kansas); nephews and nieces: Keith Douglas Figgins (Tucson, Arizona), Michael Jay O'Feagan (Aurora, Colorado), Steven Jeffrey (Karen Grant) Figgins (California), and Margaret Jean Figgins (John) Gunzner (Lakewood, Colorado); Suzette Lynn Figgins Holston (Phoenix, Arizona); Linda Sue Stevens (David) Scott (Corpus Christi, Texas), Roberta Mae Gore Hughes (Olathe, Kansas), Connie Sue Gore (John) Lykins (Midlothian, Texas), Toni Lyn Gore Massey (Oregon), John Thomas Gore (David Fabro) (Arlington, Texas); Teena Doty Reavis (Burlington, Kansas), Tamra Doty (Sacramento, California); Danny Armstrong (Topeka, Kansas) and Penny Armstrong Mueller (Edwardsville, Kansas).

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Terrance Figgins; adopted sisters Patricia Ann Figgins (Thomas), Mary Lou Figgins (Doty), and Jeanne Marie Figgins (Armstrong); nephews, Timothy Neil Figgins and Donald Dean Figgins, and niece Janice Armstrong Desbien.

Larry was cremated. A memorial service was held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, September 14, 2017, at Grace Episcopal Cathedral. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jefferson County Humane Society, 15295 K4 Highway, Valley Falls, Kansas 66088 or the Grace Cathedral Capital Campaign, 701 SW 8th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66603.
