Lawrence James "Jim" Gerety passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at a local hospital. Jim was born August 4, 1930, in Topeka, KS. He was the son of B.C. "Bab" and Minnie (Northrup) Gerety. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1950, and enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard.
Jim worked as an aircraft mechanic, flight engineer, and crew chief on several types of aircraft until his retirement in 1990. Throughout Jim's life, he continued farming and raising Polled Hereford cattle, as well as, gardening.
Jim married the love of his life JoAnn "Jody" Phillips on May 1, 1955. She survives at the home. Other survivors include his son, Phil, Topeka, and a grandson, Ensign, 01 U.S. Navy Jake (Gina) Woodley, Washington, and sister, Mary (B.D.) Ehler, Vassar. Numerous nieces and nephews survive. Jim's parents and two sisters, Isabel (Adam "Pappy") Lucas, and Doris (Roger) Oglesbee preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 21, 2016, at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at the funeral home followed by full military graveside honors at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will greet family and friends at Berryton United Methodist Church following the committal service.
