Layton Eugene Voorhees, 62, of Topeka, was born November 8, 1948 in St. Joseph, Missouri to parents Eugene W. and Leah M. (Thompson) Voorhees and died June 20th, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family.
Layton grew up on Oscar Street in St. Joseph, attended Pershing elementary and graduated from Lafayette High School in 1967. Layton married Sharon Winchester and they later divorced.
In 1978 Layton moved from St. Joseph to Hiawatha, Kansas and opened Voorhees Office Equipment Co., which he owned and operated for 15 years. After a several years of route sales, he went to work for Sac and Fox Casino, where he retired as a supervisor after more than 11 years. In 2003 Layton married Karen Pentico and in 2006 they moved to Topeka, Kansas.
Layton is preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Leah Voorhees.
He is survived by his wife, Karen, his son Archie (and Sheila) and grandchildren Justin, Alex, Kaylee, Jack and Josie; daughter Amy (and Travis Schell) and daughter Kim (and Steve Moten) and grandchildren McKenna and Maddox. He is also survived by three uncles, one aunt, many loving cousins and lifelong friends. Layton died of complications from COPD.
He wished to be cremated. There will be a celebration of his life on Saturday, June 25 at 2pm at Heaton, Bowman, Smith & Sidenfaden Funeral Home in St. Joseph, Missouri. Memorials can be made in his name to:
