Leland O. Townley, of Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born March 7, 1920 to O. J. and Fannie Cox Townley at Kirwin, KS. His dream of going to K-State and studying Electrical Engineering was realized in 1938, where he met his wife of 68 years, Marjorie Oliver, married November 9, 1940. Following wartime Naval service and employment in the aircraft industry, he earned his B.S. degree from KSU in 1947. After graduation, he joined Santa Fe Railroad as a Special Apprentice followed by a series of advancements within the company. He was active in several railroad professional organizations. Leland retired as Assistant Manager-Industrial Engineering after 31 years of service to the Santa Fe. He was the father of four sons, proudly watching all graduate from KSU. He was active in the Methodist Church, teaching adults, singing in the choir and holding various offices. He was also a Cub Scout Master. Traveling was a highlight of Leland's retirement, visiting over 40 countries as well as the U.S. His interest in foreign culture started an interesting extensive bell collection. He also enjoyed square dancing with the Top-Kan Twirlers and was active with Santa Fe Retirees Club, serving as President. Leland is survived by his wife, Marge, sons Duane (Terry), Larry (Carolyn) and Roger (Jane). He was a proud grandfather of 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Leland's sister and a son preceded him in death. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Tecumseh United Methodist Church. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall at the church. Private inurnment will take place. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Tecumseh U.M.C., 334 SE Tecumseh Rd., Tecumseh, KS 66542 or Midland Hospice Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
