Lenice Leetta Massey

April 8, 1919 — August 25, 2022

After spending 103 years on this earth, heaven gained the most loving, caring, amazing, kind and beautiful angel on August 25, 2022.

Lenice was born on April 8, 1919 to Arthur Beryl and Mora E. (Lovette) Stephens in Kinsley, Kansas.

Lenice met her soon to be husband, Ralph Millard Massey, while he was traveling and painting houses and was married on January 30, 1939. From that marriage they were blessed with two sons, Abe and Don. Ralph died in battle while serving his country in the war on March 24, 1945 and left Lenice on her own to raise her two sons.

She moved her family to Topeka where she transferred with the State of Kansas from Hutchinson, Kansas and held several positions including Principal Accountant with the Department of Health and Environmental from 1954 to 1962. Business Manager, Chief of Administrative Services from 1962 to 1983, Director of Personnel and Employment Service, since 1983, Director Personnel Suggestion Award Committee Division Personnel from 1979 to 1982 and Member Committee, Accountant for Topeka Day Care Association from 1968 to 1972.

Among her achievements, she received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Washburn University in Topeka in 1970 and her Master of Business Administration from the University of Kansas in 1979. She was also a member of the American Business Woman and was listed as a noteworthy Personnel Director by Marquis Who's Who.

Survivors include her sons, Abe (Jean) and Don; adopted son, Clinton; 7 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.

Several remember Lenice for her love of design and building. In fact, Lenice managed the completion of her last three homes. She is also remembered for her corn chowder and black bottom rolls during the holidays.

Honoring Lenice's request cremation is planned. A visitation will be held Friday, September 9, 2022 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Dove Cremations and Funerals – Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd., Topeka, KS 66610. Lenice will be inurned next to her husband, Ralph in Kinsley, Kansas.
