Leo Russell Hines, a cherished member of his family and a dedicated professional, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 100. Born on February 6, 1925, in Superior, Nebraska, Leo lived a full and impactful life, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered by many.
A proud alumnus of the University of Kansas, Leo earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering. His professional career as a structural engineer was marked by significant contributions to several prominent projects, including the Eisenhower Chapel in Abilene, the Kansas Judicial Center in Topeka, and the Landon Arena and Exhibition Hall at the Stormont Vail Events Center in Topeka. His colleagues knew him not only for his professional expertise but also for his good sense of humor and hard-working nature. Leo cherished the daily moments he shared over coffee with his coworkers, creating lasting friendships built on mutual respect and camaraderie.
In addition to his engineering endeavors, Leo proudly served his country in the Navy V-12 program while attending Washburn University of Topeka. His commitment to service was a testament to his character, exemplifying the values of dedication and sacrifice.
Leo was a man of many interests; he passionately enjoyed golfing and watching sports. One of his most profound loves was music, as he shared his voice for over 60 years with the choir of Westminster Presbyterian Church. His commitment to his musical community reflected his love for connection and spirituality.
Throughout his life, Leo demonstrated a quiet strength and a profound love for his family. He was particularly proud of his children and grandchildren, often expressing his joy in their accomplishments. He is survived by his son, Martin (Aimye) Hines, of Topeka; his granddaughter, Elise Hines, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and his grandson, Taylor Hines, of Oceanside, California.
Leo was predeceased by his beloved wife, Caroline Hines, with whom he shared 72 beautiful years of marriage. He also leaves behind the memories of his son Phillip Hines, and his siblings, including Fern Hamburger, Pearl Bower, Erma Stutesman, Beulah Webber, and his brother Dale Hines.
Leo Russell Hines will be remembered not just for his professional achievements, but for the incredible love he fostered within his family and the joy he brought to those around him. His spirit will continue to resonate through the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
