Leo J. Thimmesch, 74, of Topeka, passed away on June 2, 2010. He was born on August 31, 1935, in New Albin, Iowa, the son of Henry and Helen (Arndt) Thimmesch. Leo was raised and schooled in New Albin, and at the age of 17, joined the United States Air Force, working as a jet mechanic. He was very proud of serving his country, serving two tours of duty in the Vietnam War. In 1973, he retired from the military after 20 years of service. On Sept. 16, 1961, he married Ann Strub, in New Albin. She survives. He is survived by his three children, Shane (Debbie) Thimmesch, Connie (Chris) O'Neill, both of Topeka, and Roger (Shannon) Thimmesch, of Overland Park; grandchildren, Nick, Justin, and Michelle Thimmesch, Matthew and Beth O'Neill, Nathan, Nicole, and Nolan Thimmesch; mother, Helen Thimmesch; sister, Goldie Zeimet; and brother Bob Thimmesch, of Iowa. He also leaves behind his two beloved dogs, Herry and Sara. He was preceded in death by his father; brother in law, Tom; and sister in law, Donna.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Ave., Topeka, KS 66605. Mass of Christian burial will follow in New Albin, Iowa.
