Leona Marie Freel, 90, Topeka, passed away Monday, May 19, 2014, at a care facility. She was born March 23, 1924, in Topeka, the daughter of William O. and Nora A. (Brown) Hogbin.
Leona was raised in Topeka and attended Topeka schools. She moved to Sunrise Beach, Missouri in 1968, and later moved to Texas in 1976 before returning to Topeka in 2001.
Leona worked for Sunflower Ordnance for several years. She worked as bookkeeper for her husband's construction company, Ken Freel Construction in the Lake of the Ozarks region in Missouri. She later enjoyed managing RV parks in south Texas with her husband, Kenneth.
Leona was a volunteer at LULAC in Topeka. She was the former chairman of BPW, and was a volunteer for the Sunrise Beach Ambulance Service in Missouri.
Leona married Kenneth Russell Freel on Feb. 5, 1947, in Corning, Kansas. He preceded her in death on June 4, 2001.
Survivors include a son, Russell Freel, Harveyville; a daughter, Lois Marie Gibbs, Topeka; daughter-in-law, JuDee Turner, St. Mary's; brother, Robert Hogbin, Branson, Missouri; 10 grandchildren, Bert Fortune, Loreena Munoz, Robbie Gibbs, Donny Freel, Chrystall Duncan, Jessica Pearson, Jenifer Duncan, Kurtis Duncan, Ronda Freel, Galen Freel; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Freel was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, a son, Ronald Freel and two brothers, Chester Hogbin and Bud Hogbin.
Mrs. Freel was cremated. An inurnment service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 28th at Penwell Gabel Cemetery, 6th & Gage in Topeka. (Use Gage entrance).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Leona Freel's name to any Capital City Bank in Topeka. The family will offer the donations to an organization of their choice.
