Leonard L. Ewell

Leonard L. "Lenny" Ewell, 79, Topeka, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2022.

Lenny was born March 7, 1943 in Omaha, NE, the son of L. Owen and Kathryn (Lynn) Ewell.

He graduated from Windom HS in 1961. He earned a bachelor's degree in industrial arts from McPherson College, and a Master of Science Degree from Pittsburg State University.

Lenny joined the Kansas National Guard in 1964 and the Army Reserves in 1966. He was honorably discharged after 6 years of service.

In January 1969, Lenny took a job teaching vocational machine shop at The Kansas State Industrial Reformatory in Hutchinson. This was the beginning of a 31-year career with the KS Dept. of Corrections, which included 23 years as the Director of Prison Industries.

Lenny had a long and successful career with The Dept. of Corrections. He was very interested & passionate about developing private business enterprise within the prison walls. In 2017 Lenny was awarded Volunteer of the Year by the KS Dept. of Corrections. Nearing his retirement, Lenny was honored in Denver, CO with the most prestigious award given by the Department of Corrections: The Rodli Award.

Lenny was an excellent wood craftsman and was very skilled in the art of intarsia. He has made countless projects including just about anything you can imagine. He has made many family heirlooms that will continue to be handed down to future generations.

Lenny married Shirley Priddy on April 29, 1973 in McPherson. She died September 9, 2020. Survivors include sisters, Beverly (Steven) Totten, Ft. Collins, CO, and Clara Ann Thompson, Houston, TX.

Memorial services will held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the Dove Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 15, 2022 at the funeral home. Private family inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
