Leonard Dwight Johnson, 76, of Topeka, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2005 in an accident while flying a power parachute. Leonard was born on November 23, 1928 in Little River, Ks., the only son of Leonard and Ruby Cassingham Johnson. He retired from Southwestern Bell after 35 years of service. He attended several colleges, receiving two degrees. Leonard's true passion was flying. He obtained his pilots license when he was a young man. Due to his health, he wasn't able to fly his planes, but loved his power parachute. He married Betty Good on April 29, 1993 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include one son, Dennis Johnson of Topeka, one step-son, Kevin Hards, one step-daughter, Julie Murphy and her husband Brian of Topeka, two grandchildren, Josie and Jerimiah Johnson of Lawrence. He was preceded in death by one infant son, Jeff Johnson. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel, 2843 S.E. Minnesota Ave. Burial will follow in Penwell-Gabel Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Johnson will lie in state after Noon Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday evening.
