Leonard Lee Bickerstaff, 61, of Topeka, formerly of Emporia, died June 12, 2011. He was born Feb 12, 1950 in Paola, KS, the son of Leonard Lee Bickerstaff, Sr. and Marjorie (Hughes) Bickerstaff Coombes. His step-father is Jim Coombes.
Leonard was raised in Ottawa, KS. He traveled extensively, but lived mostly in Kansas, North Dakota, and Texas. Leonard served in the Army from January 1969 to March 1971 during which he served honorably in the Vietnam War. While serving in Vietnam, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device. Leonard is most fondly remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed watching crime drama television shows. He had a sweet tooth and especially enjoyed candy, chocolate, and ice cream.
He is survived by his three sons; Justin Walls, Lee Bickerstaff, James Bickerstaff; six grandchildren, and his step-father.
Leonard was preceded in death by his father and his mother.
A memorial service was held in Leonard's honor at 2:00 pm, June 15, 2011 at the Hope House, operated by Rose Villa, which was his final residence. Leonard loved living at the Hope House and made a lasting impression on the staff and residents there.
Leonard's remains will be buried at Leavenworth National Cemetery in Leavenworth, KS at a later date.
