Lester Lyle Crandall, 87, passed away at the HC Manor Care Center in Topeka, Kansas, September 20, 2005. He had resided there four years.
He was born May 4, 1918 in a farmhouse outside of Pratt, Kansas to Robert and Della Croxton Crandall.
Lester served with distinction in the US Army's 41st field artillery as a forward observer, making three landings in the South Pacific during WWII.
Following discharge from the service, Lester married Inez Viola Smith December 21, 1947. They were married 53 years until her passing in May 2002.
Lester graduated in 1949 from Kansas State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Education. He also completed his Master's Degree from Kansas State in 1966. He taught vocational agriculture at Miltonvale and Ellsworth, Kansas. He molded the lives of young men during his 30 year teaching career. He was awarded the highest hoor for a teacher in his profession, that of an Honorary American Farmer. During his career his students received a total of 50 State Farmers Awards and five American Farmers Awards. He coached three nationally competitive Land Judging teams. His students received 20 Gold Emblem chapter awards and a National Gold Emblem. He served as president of the State of Kansas Vocational Teachers Association and President of the Ellsworth Teachers Association.
Following his teaching career, Lester served as a County Agent in Atwood and Paola, KS. They retired to Topeka in 1987.
Lester and Inez were active in the Gideon's, rotary Club, and their church, the last one being Community Church in Topeka.
Lester is survived by his son, Phil and Mardel Crandall of Fayetteville, Arkansas; daughter Pamela and H.J. Willcott of Linwood, Kansas; and son Randy and Linda Crandall of Topeka; one brother, Dean Crandall, Ft. Scott, KS; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A celebration service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 23, at Community Church, Topeka. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Graveside services will follow at 3:30pm Friday at the Hebron Lutheran Church Cemetery in Burdick, KS.
