Lester O. Lewis, 95, of Topeka, passed away Friday, April 15, 2022. He was born May 20, 1926, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Oscar and Elva (Hayden) Lewis. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1945 and attended Washburn University.
Lester was employed by the State of Kansas beginning as a janitor, a store keeper and stock clerk. He then went to work at the Tax Examiners office, worked with SRS on the LIEP Program, and then went to work at the Emergency Shelter Program with the Kansas Division of Housing serving as a Emergency Shelter Coordinator for 53 years, retiring on September 30, 1973.
Lester married Norma J. Alexander in May 1946. They were married for 67 years. She preceded him in death on July 18, 2013. Survivors include their children, Marva Redick (Larry) of Topeka, Lester A. Lewis (Sharon) of Topeka and Carmen Burton (Kenneth) of Pocatello, ID; grandchildren, Jerone "Monte" Collins, Shayvonne Collins, Brandy Burton (Wayne) and Bianca Lewis; seven great-grandchildren; sister Irma Scroggins and brother Elwyn "Bobby" Lewis; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings Almenita Lewis, Leon Lewis and Loren Lewis.
Lester enjoyed building homes, fishing and hunting. He loved spending time with family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at the Dove Cremations and Funerals Southeast Chapel, 2843 SE Minnesota Avenue in Topeka. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. A private graveside inurnment service will be held at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th Street in Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
