Lindell Cook Owensby, MD passed away on January 19, 2014 surrounded by loving family. Dr. Owensby was born to Dr. Oscar and Mary Cook Owensby in Pittsburg, KS on October 13, 1921. Dr. Owensby was previously married to Barbara Teeple in 1945. They later divorced. He was preceded in death by his daughter Peggy Owensby of Springfield, MO.
Lindell is survived by his wife Geneve Johnson Owensby, her children Carrie Johnson Rutherford (Hap) of Topeka, KS, John E. Johnson (Sheri) of Shawnee, KS, Dr. Frank N. Johnson (Shawn) of Topeka, KS, and his children Rebecca Owensby Webb, Springfield, MO, Mary Owensby Thompson (Larry), Springfield, MO, Dr. Patricia Owensby Macfarlane Matthew (Mark), Jefferson City, MO, seventeen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Dr. Owensby graduated from Manhattan High School, attended Kansas State University, and graduated from Washington School of Medicine of St. Louis. He was a proud veteran, having served in the U.S. Army in active duty from 1941 to 1944 and inactive duty from 1944 to 1947.
His professional career in medicine began as a general practitioner in Mankato, KS. He became a Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1954. He was licensed to practice medicine in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Florida. He was an assistant resident in ophthalmology at Barnes, St. Louis Jewish and St. Louis Children's Hospital. He was a staff doctor at the State Sanatorium for Tuberculosis in Norton, KS, leaving with a position of Assistant Medical Director. Dr. Owensby began his private practice in 1953 in Concordia, KS, and then later retired in 1988.
He was a member of the Episcopal church in Concordia, Masonic Lodge, International Rotary Club, Amateur Radio League and several professional organizations. Dr. Owensby had many interests and hobbies. Among his interests were reading, sailing, playing golf, amateur radio and making beer and wine. He also worked to learn all aspects of modern technology. He referred to his morning coffee group as "The Old- Geezers". His keen intelligence and sense of humor will be missed.
Memorial services will be held at Central Congregational Church UCC, 1248 SW Buchanan, Topeka, KS, on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 590, Topeka, KS 66601.
