Lois Irene Lorence

November 12, 1931 — February 23, 2019

Lois Irene (Rathbun) Lorence, 87, of Topeka, Kansas fell asleep Saturday, February 23, 2019 at Plaza West Regional Health Center and is now awaiting the return of her lord and savior, Jesus Christ.

Born November 12, 1931, the daughter of William and Vera (McNemar) Rathbun Sr., Lois attended Topeka public schools and graduated from Topeka High School in the class of 1949. Lois married John Joseph "Jack" Lorence, Jr. on May 8, 1953 in Topeka. They celebrated 60 years together. They were members of the American Baptist Convention and New Beginnings Fellowship at Luther Place II.

A resident of Topeka for most of her life, she worked as the medical records supervisor at Topeka Medical Center, and as the office administrator with the Cotton O'Neal and MedAssist medical clinics. Lois retired in 2003.

She is survived by her children, Michael Lorence (Sheila), Jeffrey Lorence, and Lorene Clark (Scott); 6 grandchildren, Kerin Kuechel (Bill), Nathan Lorence (Shaunna), Jack Lorence (Brittey), Ryan Clark (Heather), Ashley Hill (Grant), Jocelyn Rock (Jason) and 8 great-grandchildren, Braeden, Abryelle and Zayne Hill, Aaron Kuechel, Ariana and Zoe Clark, Vivian Rock and Rowain Lorence. Lois is also survived by her sisters, Patti Garrett and Donna Bender (Gene), as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband John "Jack" Lorence, her sister Eula Barger and her brothers William "Bill" Rathbun and Bruce Rathbun.

Lois will be remembered for her love of God, family and country. Always ready with a kind word and to flash her unique and beautiful smile as well. We all enjoyed her sense of humor and "silly" faces. She enjoyed being with her family and loved each one unconditionally. Many of her family and friends would stop by to visit or have long conversations with her on the phone. And her Christian faith was a vital part of her life starting as a young girl and continuing throughout her life.

A Celebration of Life recognition service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 16th with a reception to follow. The service will be held at Dove Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Road. Per Lois' wishes her body was donated for medical research at the University of Kansas Medical Center so a private inurnment will be held at a later date in West Lawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either the KU Endowment in support of the Connective Tissue Research Fund at KU Endowment, P.O. Box 928, Lawrence, KS 66044 or give online at www.kuendowment.org/givenow. Or to the Brain Injury Association of America at www.biausa.org/support/donate-your-way.
