Lois Margaret Mitchell, 87, of Topeka, passed away Friday, October 31, 2008.
She was born April 4, 1921 in Topeka, the daughter of Charles L. and Hester (Hamilton) Simmons. She was a graduate of Topeka High School. She was employed by Santa Fe Railroad and later served as secretary at the Highland Park United Methodist Church of which she was a member. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women, and volunteered at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library for many years.
Lois married Robert E. Mitchell on April 3, 1948 in Topeka. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, Bob C. Mitchell (Nancy) of Olathe, KS, Tom O. Mitchell (Joi Hoffsommer) of Champaign, IL; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Rebecca Bird, Mary May, Charles Simmons, and Ruth Simmons.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Monday, November 3, 2008 at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 2914 S.E. Michigan, Topeka. Interment will follow at Topeka Cemetery. Mrs. Mitchell will lie in state after 3 p.m., Sunday at the Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the Friends of the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library Foundation or to Highland Park United Methodist Church.
